REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The 18th-ranked women's rowing team upset 16th-ranked Louisville with wins in the First Varsity 8+ and First Varsity 4+ races on Sunday in Redwood Shores, Calif. The Tigers wrapped up the weekend winning four races over the two days.
Clemson started the day with an upset win in the First Varsity 8+ race over the future ACC opponent. The reigning ACC Crew-of-the-Week recorded a time of 6:49.40 ahead of the Cardinals' time of 6:56.30. It was the fifth victory in six tries for the 1V8 this season.
It was the first win over a ranked opponent for a 1V8 crew since 2012 when the Tigers knocked off 14th-ranked Washington State. That win also came in the state of California at the San Diego Crew Classic.
The third race of the day, between the First Varsity 4+ crews, featured a tightly contested battle. The two crews remained neck-and-neck with each other until the finish when Clemson was able to pull ahead for the victory. The Tigers' 1V4 edged out the Cardinals by less than two full seconds.
A Clemson First Varsity 4+ crew has now defeated a ranked opponent each of the last five seasons. Last season, the 1V4 knocked off ninth-ranked Stanford, also in Redwood Shores, Calif.
The Cardinals took both the Second Varsity 8+ and Second Varsity 4+ races. Louisville had a strong showing in both, which were the two most lopsided races of the day.
Clemson returns to action on April 19-20 when they host the Clemson Invite on Lake Hartwell. The two-day event will feature 21 teams from all across the country.
