Clemson, SC- Clemson All-American Kyle Stanley and incoming freshman Jacob Burger both advanced to the second round of the North-South Amateur at Pinehurst #2 Golf Club in Pinehurst, NC on Wednesday. But, rising seniors Phillip Mollica and David May were defeated in first round matches.

Burger defeated May in a head-to-head battle of 2008-09 Clemson teammates in 20 holes. Burger, from Orangeburg, SC, was up two holes with three to play, but May birdied the 16th hole, then won the 18th when Burger made a bogey after hitting an errant drive. After both players made par on the first playoff hole, Burger made a 12-foot birdie putt to win the match and advance to Thursday's second round.

Stanley, playing in his first tournament since missing the cut by just one shot at the United States Open at Torrey Pines, defeated Wesley Bryan of Chapin, SC 4 and 2 in his first round match.

Mollica, who won six matches to claim the North-South Amateur last year, lost in the first round to Adam Long of Wentzville, MO in 21 holes.
