Men's Golf in Finals of Rolex Match Play Championship

MIAMI, Fla.- Lucas Glover and Jonathon Byrd each won two matches Sunday to lead Clemson into the finals of the Rolex National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships at Doral Resort & Golf Club in Miami, FL. Clemson defeated #5 Arizona State 3-2 in the first round, then defeated #1 seed Oklahoma State in the second round by the same score.

The tournament is the only match play format of the college golf season and features eight of the top teams in college golf. Clemson, seeded #4 in the event, will meet #2 seed UNLV in the finals on Monday.

John Engler, a freshman from Augusta, GA, clinched the victory over Arizona State in the morning match as he defeated his opponent 1 up. Engler was one down with four holes to play. He birdied the 16th hole to pull even, then rolled in a 15-foot put for a birdie on 18 to win the match.

Glover, a freshman from Greenville, SC, won the deciding match in the afternoon team victory against Oklahoma State by defeating Landry Mahan 1 up. Glover was 2 down with four to play, then won three holes in a row to take a one hole lead. He parred the last hole to take have the hole and win the match, giving Clemson the 3-2 team win.

All of the matches in the Oklahoma State vs. Clemson team match were close and not decided until at least the 16th hole. Engler lost to Charles Howell 3 and 2, and Brennen King lost to Boyd Summerhays by the same 3 and 2 score. Byrd downed Bo Van Pelt 3 and 1 and Charles Warren downed Ed Loar 2 and 1 to tie the team score at two apiece. Glover then provided the heroics in the last match on the course.
