BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- Freshmen Lucas Glover and John Engler both rank in the top 10 individually to lead Clemson to a first-place ranking after the first two rounds of the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Golf Club in Birmingham, AL. The Tigers have a five stroke lead over Florida and Arizona through 36 holes of the 54-hole event. The Tournament features 12 of the top teams in men's college golf. Seven of the top 15 teams from the 1997 NCAA event are in this field.
The final round will be held on Tuesday.
Glover, a native of Greenville, Sc, stands in fourth place individually after shooting rounds of 70 and 71 on Monday. His 141 total is three shots off the pace set by Rory Sabbatini of Arizona. Engler, playing in his first career tournament for the Tigers, shot rounds of 74 and 70 on the par 71, 6958-yard course. Engler's 144 total stands in a tie for ninth.
Sophomore Jonathan Byrd also stands at 144 after two rounds. Byrd, a native of Columbia, SC, had rounds of 75 and 69 on Monday. The 69 was the low round of the second round by a Tiger and the only round under 70 by a Clemson player on Monday.
Defending NCAA champion Charles Warren had two rounds of 74 on Monday. His first round featured a 32 on the front side, but he shot a 42 on the back. Senior Chad Starliper had rounds of 73 and 82 and stands at 155 after two rounds.
