Phil Rogers was easily one of Clemson's greatest receivers in the 1960s. Rogers played for the Tigers from 1965-67, including the 1966 and 1967 seasons as starting flanker. Rogers's best game at Clemson was in 1965 against North Carolina. In that game, Rogers caught 11 passes for 129 yards. Each of his three years on the squad, he was the Tigers leading receiver (466 yards in 1965, 574 in 1966, and 429 in 1967). Throughout his career, Rogers became the first Tiger receiver to ever top the 100-reception plateau for his career. He finished with 106 career receptions, a mark that still stands in the top 15 in school history. Over his three seasons, he totaled 1,469 yards (ranked in the 15 in school history) and five touchdowns. In 1974, at the age of 27, Rogers died after a courageous bout with a malignant brain tumor. He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1989. |
