John Phillips was an All-American offensive lineman for Danny Ford's Tigers in the mid 1980s. He was named first-team All-American in 1986 and second-team All-American in 1987. During each of those years, he was also selected to the All-ACC team and captured the Jacobs Blocking Trophy for South Carolina. In 1987, his senior season, he had 103 knockdown blocks and had 100 knockdown blocks during his junior season in 1986. He concluded his career with 245 knockdown blocks.

For his career, he played in 47 games and started in 32. He was a part of the bowl wins over Stanford (Gator Bowl) and Penn State (Citrus Bowl) and was a co-captain, with Michael Dean Perry, for the 1987 team.

After graduating in 1989, Phillips returned to Clemson as a graduate assistant coach for the 1990 and 1991 season. He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame in 1999.
