Bill Mathis was a football star for the Tigers between 1957-59. He played many positions throughout his three-year career at Clemson. He was a running back, punter, and a defensive back. He was on the 1958 team that lost to number-one ranked LSU in the 1959 Sugar bowl as well as the 1959 team that won the Bluebonnet Bowl.

As a running back he had 975 yards in 216 carries, 34 catches for 602 yards, and seven touchdowns. As a defensive back he had two interceptions and as a punter he averaged 35.8 yards a punt.

After leaving Clemson he went on to play professional football for the New York Jets. He played there for 11 years until he retired in 1970.
