Tom Barton, nicknamed "Black Cat," spent two years in the Navy prior to attending Clemson. His senior year, he was named to the All-State, All-South, and All-American teams. He also received the Blue Key Award as the Outstanding Athlete of the Year in 1952. In 1953, he played in the All-Star College-Pro Game in Chicago. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the sixth round.
After graduating, Barton went on to earn Master's and Doctoral degrees in Education and served as the President of Greenville Technical College. He was inducted into the Clemson Hall of Fame and the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 1987.
