Ahrens Wins Javelin In 49er Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Dylan Ahrens turned in the top performance of the day for the Tigers on Friday at the Charlotte 49er Classic, winning his event and moving up in Clemson history. Overall, Clemson set itself up for a big finale on Saturday as it qualified eight student-athletes for the finals of their respective events.

Ahrens won the javelin with a personal best mark of 207-5 in his first appearance of 2017. The sophomore is now sixth all-time in Clemson history. The personal best is just shy of a 13 feet improvement as he threw 194-8 at the Georgia Invitational a year ago.

Jordan Pickerel and Mpho Makofane each finished in the top eight of their respective events as Pickerel finished sixth in the hammer with a mark of 161-8 and Makofane finished the 1500m run in 3:54.04 to take seventh place.

On the women’s side, Ersula Farrow finished second in the 1500m run with a time of 4:29.91 and Lakeisha Warner took seventh in the 400m as she clocked in at 55.75. Valerie Johnson and Danielle Borriello each placed eighth in their respective field events as Johnson registered a leap of 18-6 in the long jump and Borriello threw 157-0 in the hammer.

Alex Sands, Cordell Lamb and Kirk Lewis each qualified for the finals for the men while Angelica Collins, Rebekah Smith, Ebony Williams, Torie Robinson and Markeeta Thomas are all in the finals for the women.

The Charlotte 49er Classic concludes Saturday, March 18 with events running throughout the day from 10:00 a.m., to 5:45 p.m.
