CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s tennis team closed out it’s 2018 regular season Sunday afternoon against Notre Dame at the AU Tennis Center. The Tigers rallied after losing the doubles point, but ultimately fell 4-3 to the 26th-ranked Fighting Irish. Clemson concludes the regular season at 10-12 (3-9 ACC), while Notre Dame finishes at 17-12, (7-5 ACC).
Notre Dame took a hard-fought doubles point against the Tigers with the point being decided by a tiebreak on court three. Carlos Kelaidis and Yizhou Liu finished first with a victory at No. 2, 7-5. The Fighting Irish went on to take No. 1 (7-5) and No. 3 doubles 7-6 (4).
In singles, the Fighting Irish took an early 3-0 lead with straight-set wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Moments later, Notre Dame clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set win at No. 4. Liu picked up his fifth consecutive win, defeating Guillermo Cabrera, 6 -2, 6-2 at No. 3. At No. 2, Alex Favrot defeated his fourth nationally ranked opponent, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 to give the Tigers their final point of the match.
Clemson earned the No. 11 seed in the ACC Tournament and will return to the court on April 26 as they face No. 6 Duke at 5 p.m. in Cary, N.C.
