CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson rowing program announced its 2018 spring competition schedule on Wednesday. Fourth-year head coach Stephen Frazier Wong will compete his crews in six races this spring before the NCAA Championships, and Clemson will play host to three of those events.
“We look forward to a challenging and exciting 2018 spring racing season,” Frazier Wong said. “We have ordered a new start platform for our home course and hope to have it installed by the Carolina Cup on March 10. This start platform will make one of the best race courses in the country even better, especially for our larger events like the Clemson Invitational and ACC Championships.
“Our away racing includes strong competition that will provide opportunities to prove ourselves at the highest level. The Cardinal Invite, the ACC/Big 10 Challenge, and the Sunshine State Invite will give us the occasion to line up against many top teams. Our last away race, the Sunshine State Invite, will be one that will hold special significance for our team as we have a handful of current rowers as well as incoming 2019 recruits who live in Florida. Sarasota, Fla. is also the hometown of Emily Goff, one of our senior varsity coxswains, was the site of the 2017 World Rowing Championships and is the site of the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships.”
The spring begins with the Carolina Cup on March 10, which will be the first event of the year on Lake Hartwell. The Tigers then travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn. for the Cardinal Invite on March 17-18, and it will be the second year in a row that Clemson has raced in that event. Clemson rounds out March with a trip to the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, which will be in Columbus, Ohio on March 31.
A week later, the Tigers will head south for the Sunshine State Invite in Sarasota, Fla. on April 6-7. Clemson finishes the year at home, hosting the Clemson Invitational on April 14-15 as well as the ACC Championships on May 13. This will be the ninth straight year that Lake Hartwell is the host venue for the conference championships.
