Recently remodeled Littlejohn Coliseum sported a new look for the Tigers in the 2002-03 season, making it one of the top facilities in the NCAA. The $31 million renovation cost 10 times as much as the original Littlejohn Coliseum, which opened its doors on November 30, 1968 with a 76-72 victory over Georgia Tech.
After playing their first eight home games of 2002-03 at The Civic Center of Anderson, the Tigers returned to Littlejohn on January 5, 2003 for a nationally-televised game against Duke. The Lady Tigers’ first competition in the new building was on January 16, 2003 as they played host to eighth-ranked North Carolina.
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers have had great success in the building. Since its opening in 1968, the Tiger men’s team has collected 50 wins against ranked opponents, 21 of which were against top-10 teams, and have won nearly three-quarters of their home games overall. The Lady Tigers have an impressive resume as well, compiling 45 wins over ranked opponents and 20 wins over top-10 foes. The Lady Tigers are 209 games over .500 at Littlejohn for a .739 winning percentage. All of these impressive wins were not without great fan support.
The highest attendance on record for a basketball game in Littlejohn is 13,863, when Clemson knocked off #1 Duke 87-82 in overtime on January 9, 1980. On that same evening, the #18 Lady Tigers crushed Duke 111-56 before more than 9,000 orange-clad fans. Littlejohn Coliseum has been cited as one of the most difficult venues to compete in for opposing teams in part because of the proximity of the fans to the court.
The new-look Littlejohn not only refreshed the interior, but also expanded the total square footage from 95,000 to 167,500 square feet. With this expansion, Littlejohn was able to enhance nearly every facet of facility usage for the players, fans, and media. For the athletes, there were new locker rooms, a weight training facility nine times its original size, a training room eight times its original size, a new playing floor and the Huckabee Annex, the practice facility.
Fans now enjoy twice as many concessions stands, three times the number of female restrooms and twice as many for males, ten times the number of handicap seats, a four-sided video board for in-game entertainment and all new purple cushion seats adorned with tiger paws.
The press benefit from 30 writer work areas, a new pre-game eating area, a photo area with wireless and Ethernet connections, a new post-game interview room, various TV-friendly additions and wireless high-speed internet throughout the Coliseum.
