Clemson Travels to Insperity Augusta State Invitational

CLEMSON, SC - Sophomore Billy Kennerly hopes to duplicate his fine play last year in Augusta, GA this weekend as the Clemson Tigers compete in the Insperity Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hill County Club in Augusta, GA. Kennerly was Clemson's top golfer in the tournament last year with a two-under-par score of 214.

Once again the event will feature strong competition as 13 of the 15 teams currently rank among the top 50 in the nation. Clemson and Virginia Tech are the only ACC teams in the field, while South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia are SEC representatives.

Clemson will play with SMU and Purdue on Saturday. Play on Saturday will begin at 8:30 AM, as all 15 teams will have a shot gun start. All 15 teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 and on Sunday.

Texas, currently ranked fourth in the nation, the highest ranked team in the field and the defending champion of the tournament that is in its 35th year. Fans can follow the scores on golfstat.com. Fans in the area can watch the action free of charge.

Joining Kennerly in the field will be freshmen Stephen Behr, Cody Proveaux and Miller Capps. Crawford Reeves is the only Clemson senior participating.

Behr has the top stroke average on the Tigers team with a 72.50 figure. Eight times he has had the best round of the day and he has been Clemson's best player in four of the seven team tournaments so far.

Proveaux has a 73.86 stroke average for his 21 rounds, six of which have been scores at par or better. His best tournament was a seventh-place finish at the US Collegiate in October.

Capps has a 74.19 stroke average for the year, third best among Clemson golfers. He has also played in seven tournaments, including a third-place at the Jerry Pate back in October, the highest finish for a Clemson golfer in a tournament this year.

Reeves has a 74.61 stroke average for the season, but stands at 73.7 for the spring. He leads the team in greens in regulation at 67 percent.

This will be Clemson's 11th appearance in the Augusta State Invitational. Clemson has never won the tournament, but finished second or third four times, including as recently as 2011 when the Tigers were third. Clemson has had two individual champions, Jim Macfie in 1985 and Matt Hendricks in 2004.
