Van Hilderbrand has served the Clemson athletic department for 37 years and is in his 23rd as an assistant/associate athletic director. Hilderbrand is in charge of event management and gameday operations for all sports at Clemson. He coordinates the event functions of various groups, including security and insuring safety of patrons before, during, and after events.

He is certainly familiar with the athletic department. He started his association there as a student employee in the office during his college career, 1970-74. In 1976, he filled the newly created position of assistant ticket manager, and in 1980 he was named ticket manager. He oversaw the operations of the ticket office for 24 years, including the growth of Clemson ticket demands when the stadium grew to over 80.000 in seating capacity. In 1985, he was made an assistant athletic director.

Hilderbrand worked as athletic supervisor for the Greenwood Recreation Department for two years after graduation, and in 1976, he returned to Clemson. Hilderbrand graduated from Clover (SC) High School in 1970. He was the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball until 1993, when former Tiger gridder Lamont Hall broke his mark. Hilderbrand earned his degree in parks and recreation administration from Clemson in 1974. The 59-year old is married to the former Diane Harris of Clover and they have two children, Van Jr., a 2002 Clemson graduate, and Lee Elizabeth, a 2008 Clemson graduate.
