Tigers Open 2014 Outdoor Season Friday at Charlotte 49er Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. - Marlena Wesh made a successful 2014 debut Friday for Clemson track & field by posting the fastest time in the women's 200-meter prelims to highlight the opening day of action for the Tigers at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C. Wesh sat out the indoor season due to expired eligibility, but the four-time first-team All-American is back for a final outdoor campaign.

Whitney Fountain qualified for finals in both the 100 and 200. The Bronx, N.Y., native posted a time of 11.94 in the former and 24.59 in the latter event. In the men's 100, long jumper Jameel Abdul-Mateen clocked a time of 10.66 to advance to Saturday's final.

Nia Fluker had the third-best preliminary time in the women's 400. The junior from Texas posted an opening outdoor time of 55.45 to win her heat. Natalie Anthony and Roland Hakes had top-five performances in the 1500 meters. Anthony ran 4:32.97 to take second in the women's event and Hakes crossed the line fifth in a time of 3:51.78.

Lauren Terstappen posted a top-five effort in the women's pole vault, clearing the bar at 12-7.5. Merritt Gantt led the men's field athlete with a seventh-place finish and throw of 172-9 in the javelin.
