#13 @ClemsonWTennis Falls to #4 Georgia

ATHENS, GA - The 13th-ranked Clemson women’s tennis team fell to fourth-ranked Georgia 7-0 on Saturday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts in Athens, GA. The loss is the first of the season for the Tigers, who drop to 4-1 on the season. The Bulldogs improve to 3-0 with the win.

Georgia started the day by earning the doubles point with wins in the #1 and #3 matches. The fifth-ranked duo of Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase defeated Beatrice Gumulya and Jessy Rompies 6-3 in the first flight while Caroline Brinson and Lilly Kimbell beat Joana Eidukonyte and Romy Koelzer 6-4. After falling behind 3-0 early, Eidukonyte and Koelzer battled back to take a 4-3 lead in the match before Brinson and Kimbell came back to win the match. 

The Bulldogs kept the momentum going into singles play, defeating the Tigers in all six matches.

Yana Koroleva dropped her first match of the spring season falling 6-1, 6-2 to fourth-ranked Lauren Herring. She is now 3-1 in dual matches, 10-3 overall. Koroleva had defeated Herring, 6-2, 6-0 in last year’s NCAA Tournament.

Tristen Dewar won the first set 6-1 in flight four against 33rd-ranked Lilly Kimbell, but dropped the second set 6-2 and lost the tiebreaker. The loss puts Dewar at 13-4 on the season and snaps her streak of six straight victories.

Romy Koelzer and Beatrice Gumulya each dropped straight-set decisions, 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3 respectively. The losses end each of their streaks of five straight matches won.

To cap the match, Mia King beat Jessy Rompies 6-2, 6-2 and Kate Fuller defeated Ani Miao 6-2, 7-5. For Rompies and Miao, it marked the fifth loss of their respective seasons.

Clemson returns to action on Friday, February 7 in Charlottesville, VA in the ITA Team Indoor Championships.
