NASHVILLE, TN - Clemson sophomore Miller Capps fired a career best 66 to lead the Tigers to a five under par team round in the second round of the Dick's Challenge Cup at the Golf Club of Tennessee near Nashville. The Tigers are in fourth place after two rounds, of the 10 team event that features five teams from the ACC and five teams from the SEC. The final round of stroke play is Saturday. The 10 teams will be match play on Sunday.
Clemson had a team score of five under par 279 in second round, the low round of the year for the Tigers and the second best round of the day in round two.
Texas A&M has the team lead at 11 under par 557, while Georgia is second at 10 under 558. Vanderbilt is third at three under, followed by the Tigers are two under par 566. Tennessee is two over at 570. Clemson is the top ACC school.
Capps had seven birdies and two bogeys for the round in bettering his previous best of 67. His 66 in the second round was the second best of the round behind a 63 that was turned in by Ben Craner of Texas A&M.
Capps, who had a two over par 73 in the first round earlier in the day, he had a 32 on the back nine. He hit a hot streak on holes 5-11 when he made five birdies in that seven hole stretch. Capps is in seventh place individually with his 139 total.
One of the players he is tied with is teammate Carson Young. The freshman from Pendleton had a 70 in second round after a 69 in the first round for his 139 total. Young was three under on his round with three holes left, but he made a triple bogey six on the 16th hole. He came back with a birdie on 17 and finished with a round of 70.
Cody Proveaux was Clemson's third best player in the second round with an even par 70. He had four birdies and four bogeys in his second round.
Freshman Austin Langdale contributed a 72 in the second round after an opening 74. He had five birdies in the second round, but had a triple bogey and a double bogey that kept him from a very low score. Stephen Behr was the non counter in the second round with a 75. The native of Florence had a 71 in the opening round.
