Overview: Starter as a freshman who had injury plagued sophomore year…played in just six tournaments as a sophomore, but has gotten back to form in the summer of 2015....starter for the fall of 2016....qualified for the U.S. Amateur with rounds of 70-64 to win his sectional...shot a 13-under-par 59 in a practice round at Brookstone Meadows, a course near Clemson in July of 2015...grew up around the Clemson program, he played at Boscobel Country Club as a youth where Clemson team played and still plays many practice rounds…a product of local legend Harvey Brock…Clemson’s best golfer by far at 2014 NCAA Regional at Sugar Grove, Ill when he finished sixth individually with 220 score…six shots better than any other Tiger on the difficult Midwestern course…Young became just the fourth Clemson freshman to finish in the top 10 of an NCAA Regional, he joined Kyle Stanley, Gregg Jones and Richard Coughlan in that exclusive club...played in just four events in the fall of 2014 as he recovered from knee surgery…grew up with Clemson teammate Austin Langdale, they were born just two days apart in the same hospital…both were starters on the Clemson team as freshmen…ranked number-five in the nation among Juniors by Golfweek in August of 2013, he was second among members of the class of 2013…ranked eighth in the nation in the Polo Rankings of August 14, 2013…won 2013 South Carolina Amateur with 272 score, 12-under-par…had bookend rounds of 66 in winning the title by a shot…qualified for the US Amateur, the only Clemson golfer to qualify for the 2013 prestigious event…had outstanding high school career at Pendleton High School in Pendleton, SC, he won the state championship as a junior and senior…won Junior Invitational AJGA event at Sage Valley in 2013…was named national Amateur of the Week after that victory.
Fall 2015: Fourth on the team in stroke average for the 12 rounds with a 73.33 average…ranked No. 121 in the nation according to Golfweek and No. 123 according to Golfstat entering the spring of 2016…had a strong finish to the fall, he was only Tiger to finish in the top 15 in each of the last two events….had career best 206 score, nine under par and fifth place finish at Nike Collegiate in Oregon…had three rounds in the 60s at the Nike, just the seventh time in Clemson history a Tiger golfer had done that in same tournament…finished fifth with his 206 score at the national event…finished 15th at U.S. Collegiate with a 215 score, but he had a final round 67, best among all 75 golfers that day…so he had four rounds in the 60s over his last six rounds of the fall…had each of the top two rounds by any Clemson golfer this fall…his 206 score at Nike Collegiate was best by a Tiger by six shots…it was best vs. par by five shots…led the team in rounds in the 60s with four, he had five rounds at par or better…shot 30 over par for the first two tournaments, then 10 under for the last two tournaments…enters the spring of 2016 with a 74.51 stroke average…has seven career rounds in the 60s, four came in his last six rounds of the fall…has 18 rounds at par or better for his career…veteran of 19 tournaments and 53 rounds…
Summer 2015: Had very strong summer that included a victory at his US Amateur qualifier, a sixth-place at Carolina Amateur and qualifying for the US Amateur for the second time in his career…finished 44th at Palmetto Amateur to start the summer with a 296 total…finished 24th at Rice Planters on June 27th with a five-under-par 283…had four rounds at par or better, including third round 69…finished 20th at the Dogwood with 209 total, he had rounds of 68-69-72…won his US Amateur qualifier with 134 score, eight-under-par…shot a summer best 64 in the first round to take charge early…might have had his best performance at Carolinas Amateur July 9-12 when he finished sixth with 15 under par 273…had final round 65…finished 11th at South Carolina Amateur with 290 score…had 68 in the second round…shot 146 for two days at United States Amateur in Olympia Fields near Chicago…struggled in first round with 77 but had a strong 69 in the second round…that 69 was his ninth round in the 60s of the summer….shot a 59 at Brookstone Meadows, a local course, in a non-tournament.
2014-15: Missed first two tournaments of the fall as he recovered from late summer knee surgery…played in Dick’s Challenge and U.S. Collegiate and never broke 75, but played well last two events…shot a 69 to finish third at Hummingbird, helping Clemson to the championship…then had 67 to open the Ka’anapali Classic.,…that tied his career low round as a Tiger and tied for the low round of the day…averaged 30.0 putts per round in the fall, tied for the best on the team....played in just two events in the spring, he shot 231 at Puerto Rico and 223 at Augusta...had middle round 72 at Augusta that was his best round of the spring...finished the year with 35 birdies and one eagle...had best round of the day twice in 2014-5...averaged 73.4 in first round and 73.4 in last round...score counted 6-15 rounds.
Summer 2014: Played in six events over the summer…finished 17th at South Carolina Amateur with a 217 score, best among current Clemson Tigers…had rounds of 73-74-70 for a 217 final score…was 18th at North-South Amateur at Pinehurst with another 217 score…had rounds of 70-76-71….played in the Sunnehanna in June and finished 59th, but did have a second round 69 that was his low round of the summer…also played in Carolinas Amateur in July and had a 294 score for a 27th place finish…had four straight rounds between 71 and 75…
In 2013-14: Sixth on the team in stroke average with 74.28 figure, but started nine of the 11 tournaments…his only top 10 was in the NCAA Tournament where he finished sixth…finished season with 10 rounds at par or better, including team best six rounds at even par...when he had rounds of 72-73-75 at NCAA Tournament at Sugar Grove, Ill he had the best round of the day all three rounds…all six of his postseason rounds were at 75 or better, the only Clemson golfer to do that…finished 72nd at Fighting Illini Tournament in the fall then sixth in NCAAs also played in Illinois in the spring…had best score of the day five times for the year, three of them came in NCAA Tournament…fewest putts per round on the team at 29.81…showed improvement over the course of tournaments, he averaged 75.44 in the first round and 74.33 in the final round…had 68 total birdies and his score counted in 20 of 25 rounds…hit the fairway .714 of the time…his best performance of the fall was at Dick’s Challenge where he finished 14th with one-over-par 214 score…that was his best tournament of the year vs. par…named to ACC Academic Honor roll for his freshman year.
Summer of 2013: Had outstanding summer that started with fourth-place finish at the Azalea Amateur, he shot 139, three-under-par…had second round 67…finished 13th at Carolinas Amateur with 296 score, he won the event the previous year with a birdie on the 18th hole…had a final round 70…won his US Amateur Qualifier with 135 total, seven under par…had rounds of 69-66…won the Junior Invitational at Sage Valley against a field of the top junior players in the world…won South Carolina Amateur with rounds of 66-70-70-66…came from seven shots back entering the final round to win by two…second time in his career he overcame seven shot deficit entering the final round, he also did it in 2012 Carolinas Amateur…made birdie on 17th hole that clinched the South Carolina Amateur victory…had 18 birdies among his 72 holes…won against a field of 134 players at the Member Club at Woodcreek…second straight year a Clemson incoming freshman won that event, as Cody Proveaux won in 2012…won by two shots over Will Murphy of Columbia and Ben Folger of Elgin…finished off the summer playing in the US Amateur at The Country Club in Brookline, MA…had rounds of 73-75 and did not make Match Play, but still a great experience.
In High School: Won the 2013 (April 28) Junior Invitational championship at Sage Valley…finished with 212 score…won by two shots over four players, including current Clemson teammate AustinLangdale…won the Sage Valley Gold Blazer with the victory…won 2012 Bobby Chapman and finished third at 2013 Footjoy Invitational…two-time state champion at Pendleton High School, he finished first as a junior and senior…his Pendleton High team won the State title in 2012 and finished second in 2013…played four years of high school golf, as a seventh and eighth grader and as a junior and senior…was home schooled as a freshman and sophomore.
